The Department of Psychiatry of Gauhati Medical College was established in the year of 1974. From the inception it has gone through many changes from being an undergraduate department to a full post graduate department for last 18 years and has taken significant role in the promotion of mental-health in the state. At present, with 5 MD seats every year and with a 60 bedded indoor ward, it is one of the big ‘general hospital psychiatry ward’ in the country. It has a separate drug- de-addiction wing consisting of 8 beds and also has the provisions for ‘Modified Electro Convulsive Therapy’. A separate ‘Child Psychiatry Wing’ is just completed awaiting possession and functioning. The department is involved in many national projects and ICMR research activities in the various fields of mental health issues and the faculties have published in many national and international journals.
