The Department of Urology, Gauhati Medical College Hospital was the first fully dedicated Urology centre in the entire North Eastern region. The credit of establishing a fully equipped Urology unit goes to Prof. S. C. Dutta who started a Urology unit consisting of 8 beds under the Department of Surgery way back in 1973. After that Prof R. K. Mahanta and Prof. P. M. Deka came back from AIIMS and rejoined the department. In 1988 the Urology unit was declared as an independent department. Subsequently, with lots of efforts by Prof. P. M. Deka, Post Doctoral course (M.Ch) in Urology was started in Aug. 2006 and the first M.Ch student passed out in July 2009 and the centre was recognized by MCI in the same year for an intake of two candidates for M.Ch course per year. Since then 6 M.Ch candidates has passed out from the Department of Urology. The total number of beds in the general ward is 36 and we have 6 beds in the periphery. The department of Urology does all advanced genitourinary surgeries (open/laparoscopic) like radical cystoprostatectomy, radical adrenalectomy, radical Nephrectomy, stone surgeries and surgeries for genitourinary fistula, stricture urethra and renal transplantation. Apart from this, endourological procedures like TURP, TURBT, PCNL, URSL are done. The department also does paediatric urologic and female urologic surgeries. The department has also Urodynamic and ESWL (Shock wave lithotripsy) facilities. The department has 6 faculties (2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors and 2 Assistant Professors) and 4 Registrars.
