Department started in the year 1963 with first HOD Prof. Allimuddin Ahmed and Assistant Prof. Dr. D. P. Phukan.

The department is housed at 3rd floor of the Narakasur Hilltop Building of Gauhati Medical College.

The objective of the department is to impart undergraduate and postgraduate level training. In addition it also impart teaching to undergraduates of BDS, BSc Nursing, Paramedicals

 

INFRASTRUCTURE

  1. There are 6 (six) numbers of student laboratories, out of which 2 are Biotechnology laboratories, 2 are pharmacology laboratories, 1 Neuropharmacology labaoratory and 1 Phd research laboratory.
  2. There is a museum consisting of separate parts, depicting the history of medicine, locally available various traditional medicines of various plant sources, poisons, charts and photographs, etc
  3. Department has a library facility having textbooks and reference books, mainly related to the subjects of Pharmacology and Pharmaceuticals.
  4. It has 2 demonstration rooms having capacity for 50-60 students and is equipped with modern teaching audiovisual aids.
  5. The institute has a central animal house facility managed by the department of pharmacology with rodents and non rodents being housed for academic purposes.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

  1. The department is presently imparting training to the Post Graduate students in pharmacology with an annual intake of 3 candidates. The Post Graduate course was started in the year 1972 with two seats.
  2. Pharmacology Department also imparts training to the Masters and PhD students of NIPER Guwahati.
  3. The department holds seminars and journal clubs every week.
 

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

In Pharmacology department of GMCH, ADR Monitoring centre was established in June 2010 under Pharmacovigilance Programme of India. The ADRs are collected from various departments of GMCH and reported to Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, National Coordination Centre by a trained technical associate via net based software Vigiflow.

CONFERENCES, WORKSHOPS AND CMEs

  1. Organized 47th National Conference from 28th to 30th of December 2014 and the theme was “Innovations in pharmacology- Rapid changing scenario in drug discovery”.
  2. 1.Organized a National Workshop on Biotechnology on 24th and 25th of November 2014 and the theme was “Current trends of biotechnology in Biomedical research”.
