Endocrinology
Endocrinology is a subspecialty of medicine which deals with disorders arising because of hormonal disturbances in the body. The department of Endocrinology was established under the department of Medicine in the year 1986 and it became an independent fully fledged department in the year 2001. The primary aim of the department is to provide quality health care services and to promote various research activities in the field of Endocrinology. It caters to both inpatients and outpatients and has an independent RIA laboratory and a metabolic laboratory for estimation of most of the hormonal parameters. A three (3) years post doctoral DM course in Endocrinology was started in the department in the year 2008 and the degree is recognised by the Medical Council of India. The faculties and the DM students of the department have several publications in various national and international indexed journals as well as several presentations in national and international platforms.

Services
Core Services
- OPD in three working days in a week. (Monday, Wednesday and Friday)
- In patient department (IPD) with 21 beds.
- Routine Estimation of major hormonal parameters using well equipped updated metabolic laboratory and also Radioimmuno Assay (RIA) laboratory. (At least 200 tests per day from all over the hospital)
In addition to this, following subspecialty services are being regularly provided by our department:
- Care of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus with special emphasis on their nutrition and growth, psychosocial development and parental education.
- Routine screening for diabetes in pregnancy (Gestational diabetes) and its management with focus on awareness about impact of uncontrolled hyperglycaemia in mother and foetus.
- Practical hands on demonstration of insulin injection technique and comprehensive and individualised dietary advice.
- Screening for subclinical or overt hypothyroidism during pregnancy and its prompt management to avoid mental retardation in child.
- Evaluation and treatment of thyroid cancer and its long time surveillance.
- Evaluation and proper management of other endocrine malignancies.
- Evaluation of child with delayed or early puberty and primary/ secondary amenorrhea with special focus on PCOS.
- Evaluation and management of all referred cases of young hypertension.
- Evaluation and management of intersex disorders.
Social services and activities under our department:
- Yearly public awareness programme on Wold Diabetes Day about prevention of diabetes mellitus by adopting healthy life style.
- Workshop on prevention and management of diabetic foot ulcer with emphasis on foot care advices.
- Role of Yoga therapy in controlling of various metabolic diseases like diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases etc.

To keep pace with the recent advances in the field of Endocrinology the department periodically organises various scientific seminars and national conferences. An association in the name of Assam Endocrine Society was established in the year 2014 in an effort to further these endeavours.
