Paediatric Surgery
Pediatric surgery is a superspeciality surgical discipline concerned with the treatment of surgical diseases of children such as anomalies requiring reconstructive procedures, specific surgical diseases peculiar to the pediatric age group and general surgical diseases afflicting children including trauma.
The present era of Pediatric surgery services in Gauhati Medical College can be said to have begun with the joining of formerly Dr. H. K. Bora with a super specialty degree of M.Ch course in 1982, although it was practiced by a few senior surgeons of the bygone era having special interest and training in surgical diseases of children. Starting from a scratch with no beds, no wards, no OT times, the dept has now grown by leaps and bounds to the present status of a full-fledged department boasting of a 36 bedded general ward, 10 bedded post-operative ward, 3 bedded recovery room, exclusive neonatal surgical ICU and a modern Operating theatre with facilities for Open, Laparoscopic and Endoscopic procedures. The OT, ICU and the post-operative ward are housed in a separate independent building. From a lone pediatric surgeon to start with, currently the department has faculty strength of four consultants and a registrar.
The department caters to approximately 7000 OPD patients, 1300 indoor admissions and 900 major operations yearly, apart from innumerable minor operative procedures performed in the department as well as other wards of the hospital. It also provides 24x7 emergency services and pediatric surgical consultations to the needs of other departments.
Since 2008 post doctoral (M.Ch) course in pediatric surgery has been started. It is a matter of pride for the department that after passing out, the students from different North Eastern states, are providing commendable pediatric surgical services to their respective states. The department is engaged in a regular busy academic schedule consisting of Seminars, Journal club, Clinical Case presentations, Sessions on operative surgery every week. A monthly inter departmental interaction is held with the Radiology department. This is in addition to the routine practical training imparted to the Post Graduate students rotating from the General Surgery department and the students pursuing Post doctoral course in the department.
The department has till now held several live operating workshops and Lectures/ CME’s by experts from outside the state. DR. D.K Mitra deliberated on Hirschsprung’s disease, Dr. S. Agarwala on Childhood Malignancies, Dr. D. Pawar on Pediatric anesthesia and Dr. V. Bhatnagar on Liver resections, all from AIIMS, New Delhi. Dr. Ravi Ramadwar from Mumbai enumerated on Minimally invasive surgery in pediatrics, Dr S.K.Aggarwal from MAM college Delhi, on Hypospadias and Dr. S. N. Kureel from KGMC Lucknow on Exstrophy, to quote a few.
The inaugural conference of the North East Chapter of the Indian Association of Pediatric surgery (NE-IAPS) was hosted by this department in 2003. Subsequently the annual conference of this association was held twice in 2005 and 2012 respectively. In 2008, the 34th national conference of the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgery being organized by the NE-IAPS was held in Guwahati for the first time with active participation of this department.
Students and faculty members of the department have actively participated in the annual conferences of the NE-IAPS and Association of Surgeons of Assam with papers, case presentations etc.
