The Department of Biochemistry, GMCH was established in 1960 with an initial number of 60 M.B.B.S. students, which was later increased to 156 in 1997. Post Graduate course in Biochemistry was started as early as 1966 with 2 seats per year and the present intake is 5 seats per year which was effective from 2010.

The Department has full-fledged undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories.

In the hospital section, the Department runs the Central Clinical Laboratory and also the Biochemistry division of the Central Laboratory of GMCH (Annexe) Hospital in Panbazar. The hospital sections have Vitros 5600 autoanalyser, Vitros 4600 autoanalyser, Vitros 250 autoanalyser, Minividas fluorescence immunoassay analyser and Vitros ECi autoanalyser.

In addition to it an ongoing D.B.T. sponsored project on Molecular diagnosis of genetic haematological diseases was sanctioned in September, 2009 and has successfully completed six years.
