The Department of Anatomy, Gauhati Medical College, since its inception in 1960 has been providing a number of educational and social welfare services. Every year a total of 156 MBBS and 6 Post-graduate students are admitted. Currently 6 students under Gauhati University and 6 under Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences are pursuing their PhD research work in the department. Besides, the department has also been conducting classes for Dental, Nursing, DNB, MCH, DM, Homoeopathy and various other allied branches of Medical Science. It has also been actively involved in awareness programs for body and organ donation.

- Done routinely for dissection purpose.
- Done as a public service for bodies that require transportation
- Awareness programs for body donation.

Others
- Department of Biotechnology under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India has sponsored a state of the art health care laboratory for HLA Tissue Typing & Transplant Immunology under the Department of Anatomy, Gauhati Medical College. This laboratory provides the facilities for various mandatory tests for patients as follows:
- Flow-cytometry cross matching (FCXM) for renal transplant patients.
- HLA –B27 typing as a patient service.
- Research projects are utilizing this laboratory under the Department of Anatomy for their laboratory work. (At present 4 nos. of projects)
- Genetic Laboratory, Neuro- Anatomy Laboratory
- This laboratory is also considered as the Central Research Laboratory for Gauhati Medical College & Hospital.
