Gauhati Medical College, the second Medical College of Assam, was established in 1960. Pediatric patients were initially managed in the Department of Medicine. Pediatrics was separated from the department of Medicine in 1977 with Prof. A.C.Baruah as Head of the Department and Dr. H. C.Sharma as Assistant Professor. Dr R.K. Sharma and Dr. Shanti Bhuyan Barman were appointed as Resident Physician and Registrar respectively. Because of the untiring effort of late Prof.A.C. Baruah, he was able to start post graduate classes in Pediatrics in Gauhati Medical College in the later part of seventies. MCI recognized both the diploma and degree awarded by Gauhati University. The department was started at Bagri Children Hospital in Panbazar with 40 beds and 3 paying cabins. The department was later shifted to the present permanent building of Gauhati Medical College at Bhangagarh in 1983. The department of is now situated at 2nd Floor of the main building of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital.
