The Department of Forensic Medicine Gauhati Medical College & Hospital was established in the year 1967 and Dr. Girish Medhi headed the department as Assistant Professor & I.C. The Assistant Professor and I.C. of Forensic Medicine and Jurisprudence (as was called at that time) was declared as Police Surgeon in respect of Medico-legal cases for Guwahati Subdivision vide Govt. Notification No. HLB.385/68/16 dated 14.05.1970 and the medico legal works including autopsy was started thereafter. Diploma in forensic Medicine was started in the year 1976 and the MD from 1986.

At present department is engaged in multifarious activities of teaching, training and research. It is involved in medico-legal autopsies, Clinical Forensic medicine Services & court related works. Department is imparting expert opinions in referred cases from courts, State Human Rights Commission, CBI, Crime Branch, Assam Police and Investigating agencies from other states. The Department has its own laboratory catering the need for the basic Forensic Investigations.
