The department of O&G started along with the establishment of the Gauhati Medical College in 1960 with undergraduate course. The Postgraduate course was introduced in 1970. From two units to start with initially it now has six units, four of which are headed by professors & two by Assoc. Professors. The Present annual intake of PG student is 18 (MS). Presently the department has the annual delivery rate of about 22,000 & runs both regular services & research activities including ICMR, DBT, ISCT & other projects. The department has been credited with starting ultrasonography and Radio-Immuno Assay services way back in 1983 for both inpatient & outpatients which was a first in a Medical College of the Eastern India. Presently Ultrosonography service is provided for emergency and labour cases as well. Besides general Gynaecological services, the department is presently running all advanced Oncosurgery, Infertility, cancer screening, post partum services, contraceptives & birth control and complicated Obstetrics along with a HDU. The department is the recognized training centre for TOT for BEMOC, EMOC & PPIUCD programmes of the Government. The department has proposed to start IVF & Foetal Medicine Units in the immediate near future. An Obstetric ICU is underconstruction which will make it the only institute in eastern India with services for Critical Care in Obstetrics.
