SIGNIFICANT SERVICES / ACHIEVEMENTS
  1. A total of 162 renal transplants have been performed in the Urology and Nephrology Department, GMCH, since 2004. Eighteen were done last year. The first cadaveric transplant was completed on December 13, 2023, followed by deceased donor transplantation involving 2 donors and 4 recipients.
  2. From 1st September 2024 to 31st August 2025, the Department of Cardiology, GMCH, performed 1,382 cardiac interventions (coronary and structural procedures like ASD and PDA closures, BMV, BPV) and 819 cardiac implantable device implantations (pacemakers, ICDs, CRTs), serving patients from Assam, the Northeast, and Bangladesh.
  3. The Model Blood Centre, GMCH, has been selected as one of the 11 Nodal Proficiency Testing providers in India for EQAS. It was awarded among the top 20 blood centres of India at the National Conclave of Blood Transfusion Services held in Kochi on February 5–6, 2025.
  4. The Rheumatology and Immunology OPD, started on April 6, 2025, now receives about 50 patients daily.
  5. The Department of Haematology at GMCH has performed 44 bone marrow transplants (28 autologous, 15 allogeneic, 1 haplo).

NEW ADDITIONS

1. Rheumatology OPD

The Rheumatology and Immunology OPD and indoor services started on April 6, 2025. It manages joint, bone, muscle, tendon, and immunological disorders such as SLE, Sjögren’s, Scleroderma, Vasculitis, and Myositis. Around 1,600 patients have been treated. The OPD runs every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday near the Emergency Department, with services for both adults and children.

2. Liver Transplant OPD

GMCH started the Liver Transplant and Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary OPD on June 19, 2025, led by Dr. Rup Goswami. The infrastructure is ready, and the first liver transplant is planned soon.

3. Newborn Screening

The Departments of Biochemistry, MRU, Paediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology have begun Newborn Screening for metabolic and genetic disorders. ELISA tests are done at the Cardiothoracic & Neuroscience Centre, GMCH.

Currently screening includes:

  1. Neonatal TSH (Congenital Hypothyroidism)
  2. Neonatal 17-OHP (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia)
  3. Total Galactose (Galactosemia)
  4. G6PD (G6PD deficiency)
  5. Neonatal PKU (Phenylketonuria)

Planned additions:

  1. Neonatal IRT (Cystic Fibrosis)
  2. Total Biotinidase (Biotinidase deficiency)
  3. Neonatal MSUD (Maple Syrup Urine Disease)

4. Rare Disease OPD

GMCH handles rare disease cases such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Genetic testing is available at MRU and VRDL at reduced cost. A dedicated Rare Disease OPD runs every Saturday since February 1, 2025.

Service Achievements (2023–24)

  • 14 IVF pregnancies were completed, with the first IVF baby born on March 27, 2024.
  • 18 renal transplants were performed from Sept 2023 to Aug 2024, including cadaveric transplants on Dec 13, 2023, and June 8, 2024.
  • GMCH became the first Medical College in the Northeast to receive NABL Accreditation for its laboratories.
  • The Maternity OT received LaQshya Quality Certification on September 20, 2023.
  • The Department of Haematology completed 31 bone marrow transplants.
  • 1,135 cardiac interventions were performed in 2023, the highest in Assam for the second consecutive year.
  • GMCH was recognized as an NMC Regional Centre for Medical Education Technology on September 17, 2024.
