Institutional Overview

Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), established on 20th September 1960, is the second medical college in Assam. The decision to start this institution was taken in 1959 by the then Assam Government led by Chief Minister Mr. B.P. Chaliha. The current permanent campus of the college, located at Narakasur Hilltop, Bhangagarh, was inaugurated in 1968. The hospital was shifted to the present location1980, with all departments functional by 1984.

Over more than six decades, GMCH has become a premier hub for medical education, healthcare, and research in Northeast India.
